Milling removes material through the relative motion between a rotating milling cutter and a fixed workpiece. The rotary motion of the milling cutter is the main cutting motion, and the linear movement between the workpiece and the milling cutter is the feed motion. For example, in surface milling, the milling cutter rotates at high speed, and the workpiece moves in a certain direction and speed under the milling cutter, thus milling away the excess material on the surface of the workpiece.
